Durango is still anchored by the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad which transports tourists on a daily basis up the Animas River valley through the San Juan mountains to the old mining town of Silverton. The train isn’t the only attraction, as we discussed earlier: Durango was born to be a whitewater rafting nerve center. The Animas River flows right through the town! Downtown Durango is listed as a Nationally Registered Historic District, and boasts many great shops, restaurants and hotels.
