Whitewater Rafting–DURANGO, COLORADO–Durango and rafting go together like peanut butter and chocolate. The Basque word “urango” means water town–so it’s the perfect place to flock to when you’re in the mood for Colorado rafting!
The Water Town: Historic Railroads and Whitewater Rafting await you!
Founded in 1880 by the Denver and Rio Railroad, Durango was originally meant to serve as a hub for the San Juan Mountains mining district. Now, more than a hundred years later, Durango is the center for tourism in southwestern Colorado.
Durango is still anchored by the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad which transports tourists on a daily basis up the Animas River valley through the San Juan mountains to the old mining town of Silverton. The train isn’t the only attraction, as we discussed earlier: Durango was born to be a whitewater rafting nerve center. The Animas River flows right through the town! Downtown Durango is listed as a Nationally Registered Historic District, and boasts many great shops, restaurants and hotels.
Your Durango Vacation isn’t Complete without Rafting in Durango!
Whether you’re in Durango to kayak, ride the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, or to brave the Animas River or the Piedra River, Durango Rafting should be high on your must-do list on your Durango vacation.
